Bug Box
An insect habitat at Ryton Organic Gardens

The news from the online gardening world this week is that there is a new gardening blog in town, from The Guardian. Research suggests that gardening can boost men’s sex lives and the economic downturn may be good for allotments.

This week’s show is all about getting out and about. There are plenty of seed swaps and potato days going on – in January and February. Keep an eye on the blog for events later in the year.

You may be able to attend gardening lectures or courses in your local area. Oxford Botanic Garden run a public education series every year, and GardenOrganic have day courses and workshops. The Eden Project has a full programme of events, and CAT run all kinds of courses.

Later in the year there will be open days and open gardens. Jekka’s Herb Garden opens for several weekends a year to the public, and there are workshops and talks on the day. You can look for open gardens near you, and find out about the Yellow Book, and the NGS website.

Don’t forget to vote for your favourite theme for the collaborative book project. And do get in touch if you want to contribute to the book.

Leave me a comment, send me an email or join our Facebook group. You can get real time updates from the AKG on Twitter.

  1. I’ve just had a brochure through from the Sustainability Centre in Hampshire (home of Permanent Publications and Permaculture Magazine) regarding their courses for 2009. There’s lots to choose from, all year round, including permaculture, camp craft and poultry keeping.

Check out the details on their website:

  2. Got an email today, wish I could go (too far for a daytrip from NY), but you might: The Delights of the February Garden at Aberglasney is one of the Royal Horticultural Society’s recommended events for 2009 and is on Sunday, February 15 from 2-4pm. Price is £7.95 for RHS members and £9.95 for non-members.

Don’t be fooled by the dismal weather and the bare trees of winter – February is fresh and fragrant at Aberglasney.

In fact, gardeners there happily admit to February as being one of the best months to be outdoors. The historic garden has been planted for all-year interest and is home to a unique Ninfarium, housing a wonderful collection of warm and temperate plants from all over the world.
