Square Foot Bed
A Square Foot Bed at Ryton Organic Gardens

Spring has sprung and I’ve been busy in the garden – sorting out the water butts and the compost heaps, and sowing seeds. The First Lady has been busy too, starting a new vegetable patch in the White House Garden. There’s a great piece about how they could have made a more sustainable garden over at Transition Culture.

This episode is all about Square Foot Gardening – Mel Bartholomew’s technique to crop a lot of crops in a small space and minimal resources and effort. There’s more about growing crops in small spaces on the RHS Grow Your Own website. And the AKG Sprouts are planting potatoes in containers.

Plus we learn a bit about hugelkultur and add some new gardening podcasts to my Squidoo lens.

  1. Emma – loved the podcast, thank you! The square foot gardening explanation was SO useful. And I’m equally excited and pleased about the Obama White House kitchen garden : )
