Plant an avocado stone
Articles have been in short supply for the last couple of weeks, I know. I have been working on other projects (I will fill you in on the details as and when they are confirmed), but hope to make more frequent updates here from now on.
This year I am supporting the BBC Children in Need appeal. For those of you outside the UK, this is a national telethon to raise money for disadvantaged children in the UK and Africa. It raises millions of pounds for charity every year, with people running events and doing silly things in the weeks leading up to the telethon itself.
My plan is to write a series of articles and blog posts about growing plants from pips and seeds – a topic of endless fascination to children and adults alike – culminating in a special edition of The Alternative Kitchen Garden podcast on the day itself (Friday 16th November).
First up is an article on growing a plant from an avocado stone or pit: How to plant avocado pits.
Unless you live in a tropical climate and have large garden and avocado plant is not going to produce any fruit for you. However, planting an avocado is a great project for kids as they can watch the seed germinate and develop, and you will end up with a beautiful houseplant.
I am not collection donations myself, but you can make an online donation to the Children In Need appeal, or check out the other ways to donate (including via PayPal).

If you’re in Australia, growing avocados is more of a possibility. Check out this great blog post on the subject:
