Comparing old and new varieties

Garden Organic seed trial

When the envelope containing my Garden Organic Members’ Experiments arrived last week, my heart sank because there were twice as many as I remembered applying for.

On closer inspection, things aren’t that bad. There are 4 experiments, but two of them don’t involve growing anything. I have to read the report on last year’s Gardening Footprint experiment and comment on it, and I have to survey bumblebees in my garden throughout the summer.

And although two of the experiments do involve sowing seeds, only one starts now – “Comparing old and new varieties”. On Tuesday I sowed the two varieties of lettuce seed, using up the last of my potting compost. Yesterday I got some more compost, and today I have sowed the two tomato varieties.

The last experiment is about winter salads, so I don’t need to sow those until summer.

I haven’t quite finished the sowing I set out to do in February (see the plan for more details) and will do that in the next few days before embarking on the March sowing plan.

The maximum temperature in the Grow Dome yesterday was 25°C.
The overnight minimum was 5°C.
