I went to London...

Coffee grounds

I’ve known about the Starbucks program to give away their waste coffee grounds for years, but until Monday I had never seen it in operation. It seems that the final decision on whether or not to participate rests with each store, and my local Starbucks (which isn’t very local anyway) doesn’t.

I was in London on Monday and happened to stop in a Starbucks on Regent Street (mostly to warm up, it was very cold) and they had a basket of waste coffee grounds by the door.

And so I carried several pounds of coffee grounds around for the rest of the day, and brought them home as a souvenir for my garden. According to the label, they’re suitable for use on ‘most perennials and allium plants’, so I will almost certainly spread them out over the onion bed. The garden will, once again, smell of coffee.

It’s even got a use by date on it. Apparently, coffee grounds are at their best within 2-3 weeks ;o)

  1. I used to scatter my coffee grounds onto the garden until one day when I found the cat eating them

  2. That’s odd cobnut! I use coffee grounds to deter cats from digging around in the raised beds….
