Pass the pineapple

Pineapple top

We went to visit my parents at the weekend, and for Sunday lunch dad served up fresh pineapple. I’m not a big fan, and so I was more interested in the fact that he still had the top and I could do what I’ve been itching to do for a while now – plant my own pineapple. And so the top came home with us.

Fast forward two days, and Pete has just found it – left in the car. But it still seemed to be in good condition, and so I prepared it for planting (following these instructions).

The basic idea seems to be to get a short length of clean stem that you can plant in well-drained compost. The pineapple then needs a warm and brightly lit position to encourage it to grow – mine is sitting on the bedroom windowsill with the lemons and peppers.

If all goes to plan then new leaves should start forming from the centre of the crown.

  1. Such a cool idea I think I will try it with my 5year old son over the holidays for fun if we buy a pineapple

  2. the pineapple is very hardy… at my mom’s place we have countless number of pineapples poking here and there. we usually just twist off the top of the pineapple and dig hole and plunk the top in. And once your pineapple fruited, there is usually slip shoot below the fruit. This is even better the green top. it helps also that ours is tropical climate. and pineapple grows really slooooow

  3. Good luck with the pineapple, I’ve tried twice to grow one and failed both times – so I’ll be interested to see how you get on.
Apparently, placing a rotting apple on an established pineapple plant will encourage it to produce fruit.
